WANT TO STUDY LAW IN GHANA? Here are 5 Admission Requirements You Need to Know

Law is one of the most competitive programmes in Ghana. Before you fill out a single application form, make sure you understand what you are getting into and what institutions are actually looking for.

And one thing first: study law because you want to. Not because someone else told you it was a good idea.

1. Your secondary school results matter — but so does how you compete

For undergraduate LL.B applicants, strong WASSCE results are the baseline. Law faculties are oversubscribed. Do not aim merely to qualify. Aim to stand out.

2. A good first degree opens the post-first-degree LL.B door

Applying for a post-first-degree LL.B? A Second Class Lower or better is generally expected, though requirements vary by institution. Check the specific school and do not assume.

3. Your first degree does not have to be in the humanities

Science, Engineering, Business, IT, Agriculture – all of these can lead to an LL.B. In fact, a non-humanities background can give you a distinct advantage. Do not rule yourself out before you apply.

4. Choose your law school for the right reasons

Do not apply somewhere simply because it is popular. Consider tuition, location, programme structure, academic reputation, and your personal commitments. The best law school for you is the one that fits your actual circumstances.

5. Prepare early for entrance exams and interviews

Several post-first-degree LL.B programmes require entrance examinations and interviews. The time to start preparing is not the week before the deadline. Research your target institution now and build your preparation around what it specifically requires.

Before you apply, answer this question honestly:

Do I genuinely want to study law?

Because law school will test your reading, writing, reasoning, discipline, and resilience consistently over several years. If your answer is yes and you are prepared for that, go for it.
