In what is projected to be one of the largest single cohorts in the history of the country’s legal profession, approximately 1,400 newly qualified lawyers are expected to be called to the Ghana Bar in October 2026.
The upcoming Call to the Bar, organised by the General Legal Council (GLC), serves as the principal annual enrolment ceremony for the legal fraternity. In line with long-standing tradition, the GLC holds the formal ceremony on the first Friday of October to admit candidates who have passed the Professional Law Examination at the Ghana School of Law and fulfilled all statutory character and fitness requirements.
However, this year’s ceremony is expected to take place on Friday, Oct. 9, 2026.
The record cohort comes amid a steady rise in enrollment figures across law faculties and training centres nationwide over recent years. Crucially, this historic batch enters the profession at a pivotal moment for legal training in Ghana, following Parliament’s passage of the Legal Education Reform Bill, 2026.
The landmark legislation was designed to address long-standing bottlenecks in professional legal training, expanding access for qualified LLB holders while preserving uniform national standards for qualification and practice.
The historic intake brings renewed attention to critical post-Call issues, including pupillage placements, legal market absorption, working conditions, and the preservation of ethical standards across the profession.
