Prompt engineering is the structured design of inputs given to AI systems to elicit specific, accurate, and useful responses. Advanced techniques include zero-shot prompting, few-shot prompting, chain-of-thought reasoning, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG).

For practical legal use, however, a simplified and highly effective framework can be distilled into three core components: AIM.

The AIM Framework for Lawyers

1. A — Act (Assign a Role)

The first step is to instruct the AI to assume a specific role. This technique helps narrow the scope of responses and improves contextual accuracy.

Finally, clearly state what you want the AI to do. Ambiguity at this stage leads to vague or unusable outputs.

For example:

  • “Draft a statement of claim based on these facts.”
  • “Identify the legal issues and applicable case law.”
  • “Summarise this judgment in three paragraphs.”

The mission directs the AI’s output and ensures it aligns with your intended objective.

Limitations and Risks: Why Lawyers Must Stay in Control

Despite its power, AI is not infallible. Legal practitioners must remain aware of its inherent limitations:

1. Hallucination

AI can generate confident but incorrect information, including fictitious case law or misapplied principles. Every output must be independently verified.

2. Primacy and Recency Bias

LLMs tend to prioritise information at the beginning and end of a prompt while neglecting the middle. Critical instructions should therefore be placed strategically.

3. Majority (Repetition) Bias

AI models assign greater importance to repeated terms or ideas. While this can be used strategically, it may also distort outputs if not carefully managed.

In essence, AI is a powerful assistant—but not a substitute for professional judgment. It has been aptly described as a “brilliant but occasionally unreliable assistant.” The responsibility for accuracy, ethics, and client outcomes remains firmly with the lawyer.
