President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has hit back at US Donald Trump, warning Africa will not take insult from any leader, however powerful the country.
The president’s statement followed reports in US media that the billionaire-turned-president has described African nations, Haiti and El Salvador as “shitholes” in a White House remark.
President Akufo-Addo is the second African leader to condemn the US president’s action after Senegal’s Macky Sall.
In a tweet Saturday, the president wrote: “The language of @realdonaldtrump that the African continent, Haiti and El Salvador are “shithole countries” is extremely unfortunate.”
The United Nations (UN) said Mr Trump’s remark was purely racist and the Vatican has described it as offensive.
In a response labelled as damage control, the US president denied using derogatory words but admitted his language was “tough.”
But Democratic Senator Dick Durbin who was at the meeting said Mr Trump used “shitholes” in the context of African countries.
“Shithole was the exact word used once not twice but repeatedly,” Mr Durbin was quoted to have said.
