The government has initiated steps to create additional 38 districts across the country.
The already 216 districts could rise to 254 if the Legislative Instruments (L.I) before Parliament mature.
Local Government Minister, Hajia Alima Mahama told the media Thursday funds have been made available for the operation of the yet-to-be-created districts in the 2018 budget.
A district in Ghana is a second-level administrative unit below the level of the 10 Regions, with an expected population size of between 75,000 and 95,000.
The other second-level administrative units are Metropolitans with the population size of more than 250,000 residents and Municipalities with between 95,000 and 250,000 inhabitants.
The Local Government Minister said the Savelugu-Nanton Municipal Assembly in the Northern Region will be split into two if the L.I. before Parliament is passed.
Hajia Alima Mahama said there will be the Nanton Assin district and Savelugu Municipal.
“Some district centres have grown big so it is important that we elevate them to municipal [status],” she said.
