Akufo-Addo sacks PURC boss Samuel Sarpong

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has dismissed Executive Secretary of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), Mr Samuel Sarpong with immediate effect.

A dismissal letter signed by the Executive Secretary to the President, Nana Asante Bediatuo named Mami Dufie Ofori, a Director at PURC as his replacement.

“Please ensure that you hand over and cease to act as the Executive Secretary of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission no later than close of business on Friday, 13th October 2017,” the letter dated October 10 read.

Mr Sarpong is being investigated by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) after the staff of the Commission petitioned the Chief of Staff over some mismanagement and cronyism under his watch.

The petition was followed by a revelation that the sum of ¢450,000 belonging to the Commission was transferred into Mr Sarpong’s personal account.

It is unclear when BNI will conclude with its investigation but the PURC boss has been asked to leave the office by the end of Friday for his successor to take over.
